A Movember-December

Movember is over so it is finally time for those uuuuggggleey moustaches to come off! I am totally pro Movember, but let's be honest, moustaches DO NOT look good on moooost guys (if not all of them)...Either a full beard or nooothing at all, but please WE DON'T WANNA SEE THE WORST OF BOTH WORLDS, GUYS!! It is really not sexy!

Anyways, let's get serious now! Movember was really cool it has actually inspired me to keep December as "Mo" as Movember. Don't think I am going to do something crazy and get a moustache or that this freezing cold got so deep into my bones that I am going nuts right now...but I actually think this month we can give a little extra.

To finish off this uggggglly 2013, I propose we create a chain of good things! That good thing can be something as simple as helping out your classmates with exams (something I will be doing daily until the 20th that I finish exams!), or cooking a nice meal for you family and / or friends or doing something as real as helping the people that need our help the most. Good things are contagious...so get everyone sick with nice things!

If that is not enough of an incentive, remember that Christmas is aaalmost here and that Santa and the Three Kings are making their lists...you know what that means!! (wink wink!)

So to make this end of the year memorable, remember to do something nice for the people around you...because something tells me you don't want to get nothing for Christmas!

Happy Mo-December and happy almost-Christmas!

Feliz Mo-diciembre y feliz casi-navidad!

El peso de los 23

Viernes otra vez.

The in-between day

Its Wednesday again. That terrible day in the middle of the week. Right before the fun Thursday and TGIFs happen...but right after crappy Monday and boring Tuesday. The day in-between, a boring day that does nothing but keep us away from the weekend and reminds us that Friday is sssstilll two days away. I feel like Wednesday Addams is laugh at us and being mean…What a bully! I do not like you, Wednesday!

However, there are a few ways of making Wednesday a liiiitle better:
  1. and most important (of course) go for SUSHI!!
  2. I know it’s not Friday but you can still get a drink with friends on Wednesday.
  3. There are some kick-ass parties in Wednesdays...discover them!
  4. Wear that cute shirt you bought this weekend.
  5. If you do not have a new shirt...go buy it right now! Spend the afternoon shopping and in mani-pedi to prepare for the weekend!
  6. Get a delicious croissant at Le Pain Quotidien for breakfast.
  7. Go to the Retiro park for a walk.
  8. Cook some cupcakes!
  9. Go to the gym and release all the bad energy!
  10. Have lunch with family and / or friends…and remember! the more the merrier!

For this Wednesday, I am doing number 1, 5 and 9...you?

Happy Wednesday!

No me caes bien, Miércoles!

  5. Si no te has comprado una camisa nueva...ve a comprarla hoy!
  10. Come con tus amigos y familia...y recuerda!

Keep Calm and Relax

I have my first exam today, and let me tell you something, going back to late nights and memorizing has been a little rough... So before you wish me good luck I thought I could give you guys some words of advice. If, like I have, you are planning on going back to study anytime soon, there are a few things you should remember. First, keep calm and organize yourself. Second, have your coffee / energy drink close by. Third, make sure you study with good company, they will help you as much as you will help them...plus, there is nothing like teamwork.

So, good luck to my colleagues and myself!! and for the rest of you...happy "juernes"!

Retiro time

When I started my masters one of my teachers said to me, from time to time you have to stop and look around. Stop and see what is around you, what you are living and what is to come.

Today I have done just that. I have stopped and looked around to think and breath...there is nowhere better to that than in Madrid's Retiro!

Take a day off! Happy Sunday!

Hoy he hecho eso.

Feliz domingo!

Coffee, coffee and more coffee

RING RING RING!! The alarm clock goes off...my worst enemy! It's 8am, which means time to start the race. I have exactly one hour to get to class. I shower, get dressed, get my things and leave in a rush while I am practically washing my teeth and brushing my hair. I stop by Starbucks or DoEat for my morning coffee...the first one of the day. I wonder how many I will have today... Then comes the classes, one class, two and three. By 3 pm I am done with classes for the day, but now I have a conference in an hour, 3 projects for this week and 5 readings for tomorrow. It sounds hectic and, let me tell you, it is! IT IS CRAZY!! It is ridiculously crazy but incredibly fun.

I have come to think that the success of a masters comes from the craziness it brings to its students. It is not a matter of studying, memorizing, doing exams...it's a matter of managing your time! Projects, conferences, master cups, presentations...all in one day! And you still need to have time to eat something! Thank God for the toooonns of vending machines at IE.

I have 49 other people in my class who I spend the entire day with, laughing, studying, drinking... anything goes!! 50 students from all around the globe spend every day together at IE studying and almost every night together around town.

It has been a month at IE, and even though it has been non-stop and stressful as hell, it has also been one of the best month in my life!! As the say at IE...it's my time to "go beyond"!

NIKE-fuel map

To encourage walking instead of using the subway, NIKE has redesigned the city of London to see the distance between stops. I will be going to London soon...who knows, maybe I try walking!

Crazy about...Conflict Kitchen

Conflict Kitchen is a NYC restaurant that only serves food from countries with which the US is in conflict. Every few months, they change their design and menu to adapt to the new conflict in hand. Their current theme is Cuba. Their idea is to raise awareness about the issues currently happening with the nations they represent. I love this idea. Design, food and politics all in one! What else can you ask for? Maybe that they open a Conflict Kitchen here in Madrid?

Rubbish Art

A few months ago I showed you a piece of art by Wang Zhiyuan (see here). Zhiyuan turned trash into art. Today I ran across something similar. Ian Stevenson has done something similar to what I showed you, but instead of making sculptures, he wrote messages in the garbage. He calls it "Rubbish Art" and he describes it as "bringing rubbish to life and making it talk back".

Check it out!

Words come to life

Graphic designer Arun Raj has created these illustrations showing words that also visualize what they mean...I know it sounds weird, but it looks awesome!

I want one!

"Live Knitting" by NIKE

If you really want to see what a new product is made of, why not see it! NIKE China has come up with a great advertisement. Instead of putting up a billboard with foot and a NIKE shoe, they put up a photo of a foot, which they later dressed up with the same material their new product has. The idea was to demonstrate the uniqueness of its Nike Free Flyknit technology that feels like a sock but it's actually a shoe.
Sounds like a great way of proving the awesomeness of its product!

Just Do It -- Possibilities

I love ads that make you want to push harder and challenge yourself and NIKE does it just right. Why don't you outrun a superstar or beat Selena Williams...JUST DO IT!

IE Time

After a summer of Istanbul, work, fun and a little bit of beach time, it's time to go back to studying except now I am going into the big leagues. It is goodbye college and hello IE business school. I am super scared for what's about to begin but I'm also super excited.

One of the great things I am most excited about is meeting all the people I'm going to be sharing this year with. More than 30 nationalities will be in my class and in my city. Going to class will feel like traveling to some remote part of the planet, only to come back home to sleep. Quite the unique experience. Today is my first day and I'm off to Segovia for the Opening Ceremony.

Wish me luck!

legs or hot dogs?

We have all seen the photos of people posting their feet in Instagram. Now, a new trend has been born: taking pictures of your legs…except your legs aren’t legs, but rather sausages. I know, it sounds gross, weird and veeery geeky…to think that someone spends time on actually getting those sausages to take a simple picture…But it is actually really cool. I started looking at some of the photos and it becomes harder and harder to differentiate legs from sausages.
Which one are real?!

Vaya lio…

Sunside up!

I am starting my new masters next week, but until then, I am running away to the beach for a last minute swim and a last minute sangria by the water!!

See you next week!!

See you later, Istanbul!

It's that time again, time to say goodbye to yet another beautiful city and its amazing people. It's time to close another episode of my life.

To write my last post here I have come to the center of culture and history: Sultanahmet, the place where both Islam and Christianity come together and life in peace in the form of the Blue Mosque and the Hagia Sofia and the place from where you can see Europe and Asia separated by a body of water called the Bosphorus.

So I'm seating here seeing the sun set before me and, accidentally Pearl Harbor's theme song starts on my iPod...so opportune to set the mood!

I don't like saying goodbyes. This year alone I have had to say goodbyes to two people I very much love and it has become a word I have come to hate. Goodbye...that implies not ever seeing you again, which doesn't seem appropriate since I know I will come back one day. I have to, because I have to see all the people I'm leaving behind, because I have to go shopping in the bazaar and I have to eat the real kofte -they don't make those meatballs and that eggplant salad anywhere else! And also, because I have to see my front door neighbor again –he always made my mornings better.

But until I come back, I can tell you I will miss you all. I will also miss the smell of the corn cooking that is in every street, the prayer at 5am that wakes up even the deepest sleapers. I will miss waking up to the Bosphorus every day -I always smile when I see the water and my problems seem to swim away. I won't miss so much those strong jaegermeister shots from Tektekçi, but I will miss the company with whom I drank them. I will miss the amazing roof terraces with a view of the entire city. And the after lunch super-hot 80ºC çay under the 35ºC Sun (somehow I have gotten used to that).

I will miss my morning bagel, the Bosphorus bridge lights and the amazing feeling of freedom and empowerment of the young people of Istanbul from the Saturday protests that are always accompanied by a liiiittle teargas!

I can keep going with a thousand more things I will miss, but I wouldn't shut up.

I have loved my time here, this entire summer; the 9 weeks I have been here...they have gone by so fast!! It feels like it's still the beginning of July and learning how to say Merhaba or Teṣekkürler... Although to be honest, I have only learned around 15 words, but apparently that’s enough to handle myself in the city of contrasts. I can now go up streets that before I couldn't even look at (streets in my area of Istanbul are veeeery steep...very!! In that sense Istanbul has nothing to envy of San Francisco).

I could go on forever. But I won't, because, like I said, I will come back, so it's only appropriate to say:

See you later, alligator! And, before I forget, thank you to all of you for making my summer so great!

If brands were Angry birds

Those of you who know me well know that I am a complete geek when it comes to Angry Birds. I know where all the eggs are and the tricks…anything and everything. It took me getting hooked to Candy Crush to stop playing Angry Birds. So you can imagine how exited I was when I saw Yakushev Grigory idea: putting together the most famous birds and pigs in the virtual world with the most famous brands in the real world. The perfect fusion!
My personal favorite is the Starbucks one…yours?
